Job Opening - Dental Hygienist

Summary

Assist children to attain and maintain optimum dental health. This includes education and assessment of changes in dental health status and deviation from optimum dental development, referral for needed dental health, and prophylaxis (cleaning) of patient’s teeth. The right individual must love children, have a passion for providing quality care, and thrive in a team environment.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities

  1. Perform children patient screening procedures; such as assessment of oral health conditions, review of the health history, and dental charting.
  2. Educate primary caregivers on appropriate oral hygiene strategies to maintain oral health (e.g., tooth brushing, flossing and nutritional counseling).
  3. Age-appropriate prophylaxis and fluoride treatment when indicated.
  4. Take and develop dental radiographs (x-rays) as needed, note problems seen on x-ray, and record on chart.
  5. Responsible for maintenance of equipment, sterile supplies, sterile instruments, and inventory of supplies.
  6. Employee must follow standards for universal precautions to insure a safe and healthy work environment.

Position Qualifications, Skills, Knowledge, Experience, Work Hours, and Travel Requirements

  1. Must have completed dental hygienist training, must complete 14 credit hours of continuing education every 2 years, and must be licensed as a dental hygienist in Indiana.
  2. One to three years of previous experience as a dental hygienist preferred.
  3. Bilingual preferred: English/Spanish
  4. Commitment to work collaboratively within the organization.
  5. Work hours: typically 40 hours a week

Supervisory Relationships

  1. Accountable to the dentist
  2. Will receive a formal review by the dentist, evaluating how she/he is performing within the parameters of this job description
  3. Appointment may be terminated by the dentist for failure to perform her/his duties with thirty days’ notice. She/he may be immediately suspended for behavior that jeopardizes the health care center. Either party may terminate the employment agreement with three months’ notice.
