Summary

The Dental Assistant assists dental hygienists and dentists with direct care of patients including working chair-side with the dentists and hygienists and assisting with instrumentation during preventive and operative procedures. Responsible for a wide range of clerical duties from confirming appointments to pulling charts and updating medical histories. May be able to perform expanded function procedures. The right individual will love children, have a passion for providing quality care and will thrive in a team environment.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities

Chairside Assistance:

  1. Provide direct assistance to dentist or dental hygienist in patient care including collecting and recording patient history; and communicate pre-and post-operative instructions to parent/caretakers.

  2. Handle dental charting, develop and mount x-rays, and provide dental education for parents and children.

  3. Prepare clinic for patients, including dental instruments/supplies, sterilization equipment and preparing trays for each patient, disinfecting and purging water lines, preparing autoclave reports for OSHA/CLIA purposes

  4. Employee must follow standards for universal OSHA precautions

Business Office Assistance

  1. Clerical duties including pulling and filing of patient charts, scheduling appointments, confirmation reminder calls to patients, assisting with Medicaid and insurance billing, answering phones, accepting payment, etc.

Position Qualifications, Skills, Knowledge, Experience, and Work Hours

  1. Sufficient experience in cross-cultural settings and commitment to work collaboratively within the organization.
  2. Bilingual preferred: English/Spanish
  3. Must have a high school diploma or G.E.D., dental assistant certificate, and computer knowledge/skills including Windows applications.
  4. Six months to one year of experience, preferably in a healthcare setting.
  5. Work hours: typically 40 hours a week

Supervisory Relationships

  1. Accountable to the Dental Manager
  2. Will receive a formal review by the Dental Manager, evaluating how she/he is performing within the parameters of this job description
  3. Appointment may be terminated by the Dental Manager for failure to perform her/his duties with thirty days’ notice. She/he may be immediately suspended for behavior that jeopardizes the health care center. Either party may terminate the employment agreement with one months’ notice.
